From six hundred carotenoids only two – lutein and zeaxanthin – possess the ability to penetrate into eye tissues. Lutein enters an organism with food (fruits and vegetables), and zeaxanthin forms from lutein directly in the retina. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the main ingredients of the yellow spot, located in the center of nervous tunic of eyeball and responsible for high acuity of vision. Lutein and zeaxanthin perform a very important function: they do not allow the eye cells to get old and deteriorate.
They selectively absorb the aggressive part of the light rays’ spectrum (protective screening function) and neutralize their destructive effect (antioxidant function). At continuous lack of lutein occurs irreversible sight damage. It is especially relevant nowadays when due to the decrease in ozone layer and the increase in amounts of ultraviolet rays, and also in view of intensive computers use. Thus, while taking into consideration the additional use of lutein-containing preparations we strengthen our own naturally-programmed function of sight protection.
